Reel Wāhine of Hawai‘i – Anne Misawa

An episode of Reel Wahine of Hawaii, produced by Hawai’i Women in Filmmaking, and directed by Laurie Sumiye. The series’ first season is a compilation of six locally produced short films that bring Hawai’i-based filmmakers from behind the camera to out in front, telling their stories in their own words. This episode profiles cinematographer Anne Misawa, whose credits include Margarita with a Straw and Treeless Mountain, for which she earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Cinematography.

Creative Goals

  • Shoot with a visual sensibility that honors Misawa’s own eye as a cinematographer
  • Let the interview breathe, giving space for her voice and experience to lead the story
  • Pace the edit to highlight both her personal journey and her body of work

Outcome

Helped bring Misawa’s story to a series spotlighting women shaping Hawaii’s film industry, contributing both behind-the-camera work and post-production to shape the final episode.
